Chapter Six: Fool’s Gold

A/N: Last night we had a dinner party with lots of homemade Indian food and cheesecake, and afterwards Alex and I, plus the other third of our soul, Alison, came up with some really cool, twisted plotlines. One of them begins in this chapter, which Alex wrote in record time. Yayayay! There is much more fun coming, so keep tuning in!

The sharp tip of the knife poised above the glinting water glass, the bright light reflecting from the window panes seemed to gather at a single most point on the knife. A powerful, awesome light that seemed to command the attention of all who were in the room. Of course, the only thing Harry noticed about it was that it was in his eyes, and did not notice the magik that was coming from the knife. Because Harry is a bit daft, instead of waiting for the sun’s position in the sky to move, and therefore change the angle at which the rays were striking the knife. Harry ignored the fact that he was temporarily blinded and quickly slammed the knife down on the table.

The noise shocked Hermione, who for a moment had been confusedly staring at her collection of gifts. Glancing back up, instead of seeing a table cut cleanly down the middle by an all-powerful knife and its equally all-powerful bearer, she saw a somewhat red-faced scar boy gripping his wrist, looking anxiously on the floor for something. “Harry, whatever is the matter?” Hermione asked, “I leave you alone to your own devices for two minutes and look what has happened!” She jumped up towards him and examined his arm, which is just slightly bruised from the force of bringing the knife down on the table.

“Oh, it’s nothing, Hermione,” shrugged Harry, “But I seemed to have dropped my knife somewhere on the floor.” Harry looked rather sheepish to have lost such a valuable instrument so quickly after having retrieved it from his godfather’s vault. “Care to help me look for it?”

Hermione was immediately on the floor; if Hermione was anything, she was an overachiever. Crawling underneath the chest of drawers, Hermione brushed away the dust bunnies, the lost socks, and the inappropriate magazines, looking in vain for that important knife. Giving up, Hermione stood and promptly elbowed Ron, who had fallen asleep whilst studying the alethiometer, in the side. “Ron, help Harry look for his knife!”

“Don’t be crude, Hermione. And I’m not gay!” Ron spat out, rather angrily. Hermione looked heavenward, as if trying to gather strength that was beyond her. Staring him down with a rather vicious glare, the curly-haired know-it-all smirked evilly at Ron and said, “Well, I wouldn’t know it from my experiences.” Ron gasped, turned red, and immediately burried his head under the bed. Harry, in the mean time, had been gazing thoughtfully at his hands.

“You don’t think I would look silly with only three fingers on one had, do you?” He asked, still contemplating what his godfather had told him in his Second-to-Last Will & Testament. “Do you think that I can have one taken off from each hand, or would that be a bit weird as well? I’m just think of the symmetry, of course.” Harry bent back his index fingers on both hands and then looked at them palm down. It didn’t look too bad, in his opinion.

“Harry, who cares about your stupid fingers! Right now, we’re missing a priceless instrument, and you’re doing nothing to help!” Hermione yelled at him frantically. “Hermione, stop being such a cu-”started Ron, but at that very moment, Harry bent down next to the dirty clothes hamper to the left of Ron’s Venetian urn.

“Oh, here it is, you guys. Looks like it just bounced off the soles of my shoes. That was a bit weird.” He picked up the knife, which seemed a bit soiled. “What’s this?” Harry asked. He strode to the window, where the light was stronger. Dripping from the edge of the blade was slick crimson of blood. “What the bloody hell?!” He pinched the handle between his index finger and his thumb, trying to keep the offensive liquid as far away from his perfect quidditch-toned body as possible. “How the hell did it get blood on it?”

“Harry, you didn’t accidentally cut off two of your fingers without noticing, did you?” Ron asked. Harry examined his hands, fingers, and feet, and then shook his head no. Turning towards the full length mirror, Harry began looking for any signs of injury that he may not have noticed while thinking about how unbelievably good looking he was. Once again, he was struck by the handsomeness of his face; from his well shaped jaw to his striking green eyes. I am a sexy bitch, he thought. Ginny would be crazy not to want me. His vapid thoughts were interrupted by Ron, “Mate? Do you see anything?”

“Naw,” Harry muttered, “I bet it was nothing. Maybe it just landed on a spider and cut off its legs or something like that.” Ron looked confused.

“Harry, how is that possible? I mean, I know that I don’t know much about anything, and especially spiders, which is a resultant of years of slacking off in school and a general fear of them, ” started Ron, “But I’m pretty sure that spiders don’t bleed. And if they do, it probably doesn’t look like our blood,” he continued.

Hermione looked at Ron with an angry expression on her face, “Ron, you’ve already used up your ’smart comment’ for the day.” The bushy-haired girl’s face was starting to turn a bit red. “Now listen to Harry! He is probably right about his spider theory!” Turning back towards Harry, she said, “Please go on.”

“Oh, I have nothing else to say,” replied Harry. In fact, he had gone back to gazing at his beautiful form in the mirror. “We have the knife, so let’s not worry about it. In fact, Sirius was probably just mistaken about that little ‘Have to have two fingers cut off if you’re the bearer of the ring’ thing. He was most likely confusing the Subtle Knife with some other sharp, immensly powerful, and very rare object.”

Hermione nodded in agreement,” I am positive Harry is right about this one.” And with that sense of finality, Hermione reached into her rucksack and retrieved a map of the U.K, which would be quite useful in finding out where Stephen Dedalus was. “We know that he’s from Ireland, but we have absolutely no idea about where! I mean, he could be in Cork for all we know!” Smoothing the map on the table that Harry had previously attempted to chop in half, she pinned the corners down and took out a quill and red ink. “Ron, pull the lid back down over the casket,” she ordered. “I think he chose these particular gemstones for a reason. We need to figure out what they are, and then I think the gemstones will spell out a code that will tell us where to begin our journey!”

“Hermione, how do you figure these things out so quickly?” Ron asked, his eyes open in amazement. He was only allowed one intelligent comment per day–how many was Hermione allowed? Rather than answer his question, Hermione gave him a disparaging look, and then pulled out a paper to write down her gem identifications.

“Guys, I won’t be able to identify them all, I mean, I’m not a geologist or anything,” began Hermione.
” A who in the what, now?” Ron was so confused that he looked as though he would vomit. “A geologist, you bête noire!” At this point, Ron was just staring at her, mouth hanging open, and tongue practically falling out.
“You’re attracting flies, Ron.” Hermione said acidly. “Okay, I need to identify each gem. How many do you lot count?” She continued.

After a moment of silent counting, Harry spoke up. “fourteen. Two of us will look for five, while one other will look for four.” Both Hermione and Harry pointedly looked at Ron.
Ron looked at them angrily, and said, “Don’t worry you guys, I’ll hold up my end of the work. I’ll be one of the people who’ll look for five identifications. I don’t know why you guys treat me like a subhuman, or something!” Hermione and Harry didn’t look convinced.
“Look, will guys just stop being assholes about everything?!? There is a reason why Sirius gave all of us a gift from his chest. Becuase he thought we were the ones who were fit for the jobs, right? So if he thought I couldn’t do this, then he wouldn’t have given me the golden compass!” Ron picked up the golden compass, and staired at. “Anyways, you guys are going to need me. Who else is going to keep your egos in check?”

The trio had spent hours at the library, checking through every gem encyclopedia to compare the stones that were on the box with the ones on the page. Books were piled around them on the dark-wooded tables. Their heads buried in books, the three friends were researching practically every gem ever discovered. Each person had a growing list of possible gems, and then another list of ones that could be checked definitively off the list. “Okay,” muttered Ron. I’ve finished finding what I think are the gems. What about you all?”

Hermione looked up, her eyes red from a combination of squinting and low light. “I’ve just finished as well. Harry?” Harry nodded no, and then shoved his head back between the pages of Encyclopædia Britannica. “Well, Ron and I can combine our lists and see where that gets us. Ron,” she said, turning towards the ginger,” I’ve got amethyst, diamond, peridot, garnet, malachite, and lapis lazuli.” Ron frantically scribbled the words down, and then went down his list, “I’ve ruby, alexandrite, aquamarine, emerald, moonstone, and indiolite.”

Harry shoved his list towards Ron, and then lay his head down on the books to rest his pretty green eyes. Ron added the extra gems to his master list, and then read the entire list out loud. “Ruby, alexandrite, aquamarine, emerald, moonstone, indiolite, amethyst, diamond, peridot, garnet, malachite, lapis lazuli, citrine, and lapis lazuli.” He paused. “How the bloody hell are we going figure this code out?” Ron rubbed his aching head, and handed the list to Hermione.

“Well, perhaps it’s not as hard we think it is. Let’s take the first letter of each gemstone, and then maybe it will lighten our load.” She quickly wrote down a new list of letters next to the old list. Ron moved to sit next to her so that he could get a better look at the list. “So far, I see the word ‘ace‘.” Hermione wrote that in the margin of the parchment. “And there are the letters ‘p’ and ‘l’. Maybe one of the words is ‘place’.”
“Oh, this is great! Maybe Sirius was too stupid to make a really difficult code for us! Thank the heavens!” Hermione sighed happily. “Ooh, and I see the word ‘grim’.”
At that moment, the two workers looked at each other, Harry’s head popped up from the table, and all three shouted, “Grimmauld Place!”

“Oh, but wait. There aren’t two of the letter ‘a’ in the world ‘grimmauld.’” Hermione said with a defeated tone of voice.
“Hermione, I thought we just agreed on the fact that Sirius is pretty stupid. I’d bet you anything that he didn’t know how to spell ‘Grimmauld Place’ when he set out to make the chest!” Ron said excitedly. Harry quickly affirmed Ron’s idea, stating, “He was pretty stupid. I mean, only a stupid person would choose Peter Pettigrew as a friend.” All in concurrence, the three friends rushed out of the library with parchment in hand, leaving a rather large mess back at the tables. Once they apparated home, the trio ran to the chest.
Fingers shaking, Hermione slowly pressed out the order of gems. Upon pressing the last stone, emerald, a secret compartment slowly slid out with two words written in slanting script.

Michael K (my only source for real news) reported on how Arizona kids use “vodka tampons” and “anal beer bongs” to get their drunk on in more secretive way. WHAT THE FOOK??

A while ago there was an episode of The Doctors where they showed us all how to get the sweet nectar in our system on the down low. The key words being “down low.” According to the episode, teens are getting their fix by shoving vodka tampons up their snatches and sticking a beer bong up their no-nos. This brings new meaning to the term “drunk pussy.”

Well, ABC15 in Arizona says that vodka tampons and anal beer bongs are all the rage with kids as young as 12, because it’s a way for them to get boozed without much detection. Stephanie Siete of a substance abuse center in Arizona said, “It’s quicker absorption, it’s hidden and it’s new. For females, they’re damaging their reproductive system.” Yeah, but they won’t notice that their vagina cave is dying a slow death, because they will be waaaaaaasted. Paaaartay while your pussay fries!

Stephanie added that kids in Arizona are also doing it Prince Hot Ginge-style by snorting vodka from the bottle.

Kids these fucking days! When I was 12, we were soooo not hardcore. We just used to get high by freebasing DayQuil and injecting battery acid between our toes.

Gosh…we are so cool

All summer long, I’ve been doing a lot of baking and cooking from my French Cook book that I got last Christmas. The majority of the time, I’ve been making tarts and cookies, but recently, I’ve decided to branch out and make a savory dish, a flamiche.

Flamiche is a Flemish word from Northern France that means “cake,” although it is not anything like the cakes you and I know. This is more like a quiche with covering on it.

Here’s what you  need:

1 Quantity of tart pastry

1 lb 2 0z leeks that have been finely sliced

1 3/4 oz butter

6 oz of any soft cheese ( I used Saint-Nectaire)

1 Egg

1 Egg yolk

1/4 cup of heavy cream

1 egg, lightly beaten

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Use 3/4 of the pastry to line a 9 inch tart tin.

2. Clean and cut the leeks, and then cook them for 10 minutes in boiling salted water, then drain.

3. Heat the butter in a frying pan, add the leak and cook for five minutes. Stir in the cheese.

4. Tip into a bowl and add the egg, egg yolk, and cream. Season and mix well.

5. Pour the filling into the pastry shell and smooth.  Roll out the remaining pastry to cover the pie. Cut a hole in the centre and brush the beaten egg over the top. Bake for 35-40 minutes and the let cool for five minutes before serving.

And that’s how you make a flamiche!

I have a bad headache right now and I’m not sure if I’m in the mood to write this, but I said I would, so here goes.  Actually, I said I might, and it’s not like I’m breaking any loyal blog readers’ hearts if I don’t, but I’m going to pretend that everyone ever wants to know my opinion of the movie because it makes me feel important

So because we wanted to see the midnight showing on Tuesday, that meant that I would have to miss NYC prep, and I was kind of bummed about this and almost didn’t go, but we watched the movie and it was good, so I guess it was worth it.   But ohmygosh I watched the episode I missed this morning and PC was being such a biiooootch!!  And the whole Cole/Sebastian thing… DAYUM, girl, don’t even get me started!

Just kidding.  I don’t really give a shit about NYC Prep, but I’ll probably watch it tonight anyway because it boosts my self esteem to know that even I am more mature that the all-mighty PC and his menacing sidekick, Jessie.  Although, if it were a Wednesday night and it was So You Think You Can Dance I was missing for HBP, that would be a different story…

OH MY GOSH, Kyla, stay on topic PLEASE!  Sheesh, I don’t know if it’s the headache, or the fact that I’ve spent the last two days with 4 and 6 year olds pretending to be a pirate named Captain Longhook who’s trying to save the Teddy Dog of Doom from drowning in the Cave of Despair, but I just cannot focus.  SOOOOO Half-Blood Prince…

Basically, I thought it was the best movie yet.  Maybe not my favorite because I’m pretty attached to movies 1 and 3, but as a film, it was definitely the best.  I’ve seen it twice now and I really don’t think it’s the type of movie I’m going to get tired of quickly like 4 or 5.  I thought it did a fantastic job telling the story, the acting was at it’s best, the humor was genuine, and it was overall just a pretty movie.  That last part was something that I really got to appreciate the second time around because the first time I was just so caught up on the excitement of the night and what was actually happening that I didn’t really notice just how nice and beautiful the cinematography was.

So, all of this being said, I’m really surprised at the number of mixed reviews that’s coming from fans.  From what I’ve heard/read on facebook, I think most of the disappointment is about the content that was cut or changed from the book.  To this, I only have one thing to say: GET OVER IT!  Siriusly guys, we are 6 movies into this thing now.  By this time you should be getting used to the fact that movies and books are completely different things!  What makes a good book does not necessarily make a good movie, and I think that of this movie more than any of the others, I agree with them about what scenes should have been cut.  And honestly, I really didn’t think that they cut that much!  I think most of the complaints are about the memories and Voldemort’s background, and while I agree that the whole Gaunt family thing would be a cool scene to see visualized, I also think that adding more memories about Voldemort’s family and Hephzibah Smith, plus all the conversation between Harry and Dumbledore that goes along with those plotlines would have just slowed down the movie.  They weren’t necessary, there was plenty of other stuff to include, so it’s fine with me that the memories were cut.  And really, they included enough of the little details from the book like the canaries and the “Ron, you’re making it snow” to make up for it.  I am, however, a little concerned that Dumbledore didn’t give Harry any idea as to what the horcruxes might be (except for when he stared rightat Harry’s scar), but I guess that’s just something they’re going to have to explain in DH.

Now, other stuff that I liked about the movie:  1.  Tom Felton.  Hot hot hot, such a great actor, please don’t send Draco to pigfarts because I want to see him on screen acting like an emo troubled death eater every day until the day I die.  Ok, in all siriusness, I really was blown away by his performance.  This was such a different Draco- there were no snide, douchey comments that were said just to piss off Harry, no boasting about his father’s money, it was just like Draco was completely separated from the world of Hogwarts and all the hormones that were flying all around him.  He was wrapped up in his emotions and his death-eater struggles, and I thought that this was really fantastic character development.  Sexy, too.

2.  The humor.  I was worried in the beginning that the humor was going to be a lot like movie 4- forced, artificial, and cutesy one-liners.  There were a few of those, but mostly the humor was just natural, genuinely funny stuff, and I laughed not because this was Harry Potter and his best friend being really awkward teenagers on screen (ok, sometimes I laughed at this), but because they were funny.  And Felix Felicis.  Yeah.  Genius.

3.  The acting.  This goes along with the humor, but I feel like the kids finally grew up and learned how to act.  These were definitely their most natural and believable performances yet, and THANK GOD Emma Watson has learned to keep her eye brows still.  Also, I really loved Slughorn, Snape, Lavender, Cormac, and, believe it or not, Dumbledore (except when he asked Harry whether he and Hermione were dating- that, my friends, is PROOF Michael Gambon hasn’t read the books).

4.  Quidditch.  Man that was a fun scene.  Rupert was just going to town on that pitch, and I felt really happy for him.

5.  The attack on the burrow.  I don’t care that the screenwriters made it up, I don’t care that it didn’t serve any purpose or move the plot forward.  It looked cool, and I liked it.  Actually, my brother said that visually it was probably the best thing to ever happen in a Harry Potter movie, so yeah.  Neato.

Things I didn’t like:

1.  Harry and Ginny.  Mostly just Ginny.  And when I say mostly just Ginny, I mean mostly just Bonnie Wright.  Sorry.  The whole thing was awkward and unresolved, but I think there’s finally enough sexual tension between Ron and Hermione to make up for them, so maybe they should just leave it unresolved.  Just leave Bonnie out of the next movie, actually.  We don’t need her.

2.  Harry chasing after Snape.  What they had was good, I just wanted more.  Harry is supposed to be pissed off during this whole scene because he just freaking saw Snape kill Dumbledore!  And when Harry calls Snape a coward, Snape is supposed to FLIP a SHIT!  He freaking makes flapjacks out of that stuff in the book because NOONE is going to call Severus Snape a COWARD!  I just wish he reacted a little more violently, that’s all.

So I think that’s a pretty good summary of my thoughts for now.  Hopefully there will be a band meeting tonight with lots of merrymaking and no headaches, and I look forward to it.  PEACE OUT!

Well, since Alex succeeded in thoroughly embarrassing me on the interwebz by posting a recording that basically reflected a cross-section of my mind, I thought I’d post another bit of a gchat conversation that I found.

Ok, so those two thing have nothing to do with each other because I’m probably only embarrassing myself further by posting ridiculous gchats, but I don’t really care.  Blahh.

In honor of our 100th post, I shall post about Avatar: The Last Airbender and Bruno sex conversation.

So, this is a movie by M. Night Shyamalan and it’s casting is being criticized basically because the story is centered around East Asians and Mr. M. Night hired an almost all-white cast. I just read the funniest thing ever on ONTD:
